Trouble For Bigg Boss Kannada As Pollution Control Board Orders Set Shutdown Over Violations

Popular reality show Bigg Boss Kannada is facing a major hurdle early in its run as the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued a shutdown notice to the studio company housing the set. The notice was served to Wells Studios Entertainment, located in Bidadi, Ramanagara district.

The preamble of the notice read that Vels Studio and Entertainment Pvt Ltd is an amusement park falling under green category and operating without obtaining valid permissions from KSPCB.

KSPCB has demanded that the set operations be halted immediately and an explanation be provided for alleged environmental violations. The board claims the studio is operating in violation of rules, including the unauthorised discharge of waste and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) water, which is causing pollution in the Bidadi area.

The inspection also uncovered significant lapses in waste management. Solid waste, such as plastic cups, paper plates, and other disposables, was not being segregated systematically. There was also no documentation or flowchart detailing the handling of wastewater or the functioning of the sewage treatment plant (STP). Furthermore, the presence of two diesel generator sets, with capacities of 625 kVA and 500 kVA, raised additional environmental concerns.

The KSPCB has instructed the Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner and senior BESCOM officials to take appropriate action to ensure the immediate closure of the premises. The action raises the possibility that the current season of the show could be suspended.

Karnataka’s Forest, Environment, and Ecology Minister Eshwar Khandre has confirmed that the Bigg Boss studio is facing imminent closure for operating without mandatory environmental clearances, noting that the notice to the studio was issued as early as March 2024.

“We received information that they have not obtained the required licences under the Water Act and Air Act,” the minister said, adding that he had confirmed the details with the Member Secretary of the Pollution Control Board. He stressed that despite repeated warnings, the studio was running “an amusement park” without even applying for permission.

Khandre asserted that the continued operation amounts to a violation of Supreme Court and NGT (National Green Tribunal) orders, justifying the KSPCB’s “closure notice”. He firmly stated, “No one is above the law. We are only doing our duty to implement the law, and everyone must respect the law of this land.” While acknowledging that the studio has the right to approach the court, he emphasised that “action will be taken as per law”.
