Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh has filed a defamation case against the father of RG Kar rape-murder victim, according to a report in NDTV.

TMC spokesperson Ghosh filed the case in Kolkata, accusing the rape-murder victim’s father of defaming him.

In his complaint, Ghosh said that the doctor’s father recently told media that the CBI allegedly took bribes from TMC and derailed the probe into his daughter’s chilling rape and murder, the NDTV report mentioned.

The report further suggests that the doctor’s father alleged Ghosh went to meet CBI officials, paid them and “settled” everything.

Allegations And Legal Action

Ghosh, who is also the TMC’s state general secretary, responded by sending a legal notice to the victim’s father last week, demanding an apology.

“But they cannot just keep saying whatever they want or whatever someone teaches them to say. If he does not apologise, he will have to prove in court what he has said. My lawyer has given him four days to respond after receiving the letter. After that, I will file a case,” Mr Ghosh had said, according to NDTV.

He also questioned the origin of the accusations, saying, “He is crossing all the limits of lies and drama. I understand the pain of a father who has lost his daughter. But that leaves room for questioning the words of those who are doing and saying whatever they are saying. On whose words and on what information did you make false like this?”

RG Kar Horror

The RG Kar rape-murder horror unfolded on August 9, 2024. A 34-year-old doctor, on night shift, was found raped and murdered inside the premises of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, triggering outrage across the country. Following initial investigation by the Bengal police, a civic volunteer named Sanjoy Roy was arrested and later convicted of the crime.

Following a high court order, the case was handed over to the CBI. However, the central probe agency made no further arrests.

The victim’s father has been highly critical of the CBI investigation, claiming that the agency failed to explore the possibility of multiple attackers.

According to NDTV report, he said, “CBI investigators just tried to re-establish the theory of the Kolkata Police, that the crime was just a case of rape and murder and not a case of gang-rape and murder. We have been raising this point since the beginning. But the CBI investigation officials in Kolkata constantly ignored our contentions.”

The grieving father also accused the state government of bribing the CBI investigators. “Kunal Ghosh went and made the settlement,” the victim’s father said.
