Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on Wednesday approved a key bill that allows the state government to increase reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections.
The Governor has signed off on amendments to the Panchayati Raj and Municipal Acts. He has also permitted the issue of a Gazette notification to lift the 50% cap on total reservations. A notification for local elections is expected soon.

This approval comes after the Telangana Legislative Assembly unanimously passed the Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Telangana Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2025, last week.
