Doctors at the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) saved the life of 60-year-old Kumar Mochi, abandoned in childhood and recently forced to beg after a sudden stomach ailment left him unable to work.

According to The Times of India report, fortune smiled on Mochi when the staff of a 108 ambulance and doctors from SMIMER intervened just in time.

On August 6, paramedics found Kumar Mochi lying unconscious on a footpath in Surat’s Limbayat area and rushed him to SMIMER hospital, where doctors discovered a 25 cm liver abscess in his stomach containing nearly 7 litres of pus and fluid, The Times of India reported.

The medical team promptly decided to perform surgery. The Times of India reported that doctors first carried out a drainage procedure to relieve pressure on Kumar Mochi’s lungs and stabilise his breathing. During surgery, they detected a severe abdominal infection and gradually removed nearly seven litres of pus-filled fluid from the abscess. Despite his fragile state, the medical team performed the operation with extreme care.

Professor Dr Harish Chauhan from SMIMER stated, “Medical records have documented abscesses up to 20 cm with 2 litres of fluid removed. However, Mochi’s case involved a 25 cm abscess and 7 litres of fluid, which is extraordinarily rare.” He added, “We saved about 50% of his liver. Without timely intervention, the infection could have spread throughout his body, leading to a grave condition.” The surgery was carried out by his team.

Remarkably, Mochi showed significant improvement within just five days post-surgery and was transferred to the general ward. His weight is now 44 kg, and he is gradually regaining strength, eating properly, and gaining weight.

Dr Chauhan emphasised, “This case exemplifies not only world-class surgical expertise but also the humanitarian spirit of SMIMER Hospital, where even poor and homeless patients receive free, excellent treatment. We will ensure his proper rehabilitation so that he can rest and gradually become capable of working again.”

Expressing his gratitude, Kumar Mochi said, “I can now breathe easily. Once fully recovered, I will try to work again. I had lost my job due to illness, but now I have a new chance at life.”
