The elevation of the two judges is based on a recommendation by the five-member Supreme Court collegium. The Centre approved their appointments swiftly, just two days after the collegium’s resolution. With these appointments, the Supreme Court now has its full complement of judges for the first time in several months, which is expected to help in the timely disposal of pending cases.
Justice Alok Aradhe was the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court before his elevation to the apex court. He has a long and distinguished career, having previously served as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court and as a judge in the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi, who was the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, also brings extensive judicial experience to the Supreme Court. While his appointment was met with some dissent within the collegium due to seniority concerns, he is now in line to potentially become the Chief Justice of India in 2031.
