Amid vote theft allegations by the opposition and protests in Parliament against the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the validity of the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections.

The petition, which was junked by the Bombay High Court in June, alleged bogus voting during the Maharashtra polls held in November 2024. A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and NK Singh was hearing the petition, which was filed by Chetan Chandrakant Ahire, who alleged that about 75 lakh bogus voters had cast their vote after the polling deadline of 6 pm.

According to a report in Live Law, Ahire approached the SC challenging the Bombay HC’s dismissal of his writ petition in June. In his petition, he further alleged several discrepancies in at least 95 constituencies, where the number of votes polled and counted did not match.

Back in June, his plea had been termed as “absolutely baseless” by the high court, stressing it was a “gross abuse of the process of law”.

“The whole day of this court was wasted while hearing this petition. We were of the view that costs should be imposed on them but we refrain from doing so,” it had observed.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently made vote theft allegations in an assembly segment in Karnataka during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has also claimed that there was “vote chori” in the Maharashtra elections. Opposition parties have repeatedly made similar allegations about these polls, in which the Mahayuti government led by the BJP came to power with a resounding mandate and Devendra Fadnavis took over the reins as chief minister.

In fact, earlier in the day, during the opposition’s press conference in response to the Election Commission of India’s presser the day before, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi accused the poll body of staying “silent” on the issue of voter additions in Maharashtra, discrepancies in rolls in Mahadevapura (assembly segment under Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat), and video data deletion.
