India on Wednesday described the killing of journalists in Israeli strikes at a hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, as “shocking and deeply regrettable” and said that New Delhi has always condemned the loss of civilian lives in a conflict.

“The killing of journalists is shocking and deeply regrettable. India has always condemned the loss of civilian lives in conflict. We understand that the Israeli authorities have already instituted an investigation,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, posted on X.

India, however, acknowledged that the Israeli authorities have ordered an investigation into the attack that killed five journalists working for foreign news agencies and a media outlet.

The contributors of Reuters, Associated Press, and Al Jazeera were among those killed in the strikes.

The news outlets issued statements mourning their losses.

Nearly 200 media persons have been killed since the start of the war in 2023, AFP reported, citing media watchdogs.

At least 20 people were killed in two strikes at Nasser Hospital in Gaza’s Khan Younis, for which the Israeli Defence Forces on Monday said that they do not “intentionally” target civilians and also blamed Hamas for creating “impossible conditions” during war.

The IDF accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals, as shields, and highlighted that Hamas has operated from the Nasser Hospital in the past.
