Abdullah Mohammad Abu Shawesh, the Ambassador of Palestine to India, has said the details of Hamas accepting US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan are yet to be discussed, and noted that the release of the hostages is a “complicated war zone”.

Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Shawesh also spoke on the broader context of India-Palestine relations, stressing Palestine’s official position.

“Hamas accepted President Trump’s Plan, but details have to be discussed, he said.

Referring to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose name was also involved in  Gaza’s proposed makeover, Shawesh said, “They have an issue with Tony Blair’s name, but that too can be discussed.”

“Our official position has been one force of Palestine, so Hamas giving up weapons is our official position.”

Regarding the release of hostages, the ambassador noted the complexities on the ground and said, “The release of hostages cannot happen like that. It is a complicated war zone.”

Abu Shawesh also spoke about the historical ties between India and Palestine, and highlighted, “India and Palestine have historical relations. India supports a two-state solution, and is a key pillar in the political arena.”

Hamas had announced on Friday that it accepted some elements of Trump’s peace plan, including the release of all remaining hostages, though other aspects would require further negotiations.

Under the plan, Israel would halt its offensive and withdraw from parts of Gaza, while the territory would be placed under international governance, overseen by Trump and Tony Blair.

Hamas, however, has raised concerns over certain provisions and emphasised that negotiations are needed before full acceptance.

On Friday, Trump had said that Hamas must agree to the proposed peace deal by Sunday evening, threatening an even greater military onslaught.

The territory of some two million Palestinians would be placed under international governance, with Trump himself and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair overseeing it. The plan provides no path for eventual reunification with the Israeli-occupied West Bank in a future Palestinian state, according to The Associated Press.

Earlier, a Hamas official had told AP that some elements of the plan are unacceptable and need to be amended.
