He added that both babies had congenital deformities. One of them had been abandoned in the Khargone district and was brought to MYH for treatment. A committee has now been formed to probe the lapses.
In response, the hospital has directed staff to keep a round-the-clock vigil, begun installing iron nets on windows, and warned attendants against bringing outside food into wards, as leftover waste is believed to be drawing rodents.
The incidents triggered political backlash, with Madhya Pradesh Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Umang Singhar sharing a video from the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which shows a rat roaming across beds and wires.
Lashing out at the ruling BJP, he wrote, “Government, have mercy on the newborns…! Look at the condition of Indore’s MY Hospital — rats are gnawing on innocent newborns in the NICU and the BJP government has not been able to do pest control for five years! This is not just negligence, it is genocide. Hospitals are made to save lives, but the BJP has turned them into a den of death. Doctors and the system kept lying, rats kept sucking the blood of children.”
Congress spokesperson Neelabh Shukla also condemned the incident, calling it “not just administrative negligence, but a horrific incident that shakes human sensibilities.” He demanded a judicial probe and strict accountability.
He further added, “If the state government is unable to keep newborn babies safe in a hospital, then it is futile to expect the safety of the general public.”
