A young couple in Bhopal has approached the family court for divorce just eight months after their wedding, claiming constant fights between their pets have irreparably damaged their relationship.

The two, who tied the knot in December 2024 after a love marriage, initially bonded over a shared affection for animals.

The husband, an IT professional from Bhopal, already owned a dog, a rabbit and maintained a fish tank.

His wife, originally from Uttar Pradesh and working in the city, brought her cat with her after the marriage.

What began as a seemingly “purr-fect” match soon turned turbulent as frequent clashes between their pets spilt into their marriage.

The wife alleged that her husband’s dog “constantly barks at her cat, leaving it stressed and frightened, sometimes refusing to eat.”

The husband, on the other hand, accused her cat of “hovering near the fish tank and turning aggressive towards the dog.”

Attempts at reconciliation through family counselling and intervention from relatives failed, as neither partner was willing to part with their respective pets.

The quarrels over their animals escalated, leading the couple to file for divorce. The case is now under consideration at the Bhopal family court.

Family counsellor Shail Awasthi, who is mediating the case, confirmed that the couple’s disagreements were largely centred around their pets.

“They have been married for only eight months and are both deeply fond of animals. But their inability to adjust has worsened the situation. One round of counselling has been completed, and another session is scheduled for October,” he said.

Awasthi added that the issue reflects a wider trend of individuals prioritising pets over human relationships, often leaving marriages vulnerable when partners refuse to compromise.
