Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called on President Droupadi Murmu at her official residence at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The details of the meeting were not immediately clear.

The meeting comes days after PM Modi returned from his visit to Japan and China. He had participated in the 25th meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin, where he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

It also took place after a planned dinner for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Members of Parliament at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence was cancelled due to the severe flooding affecting several parts of northern India, sources confirmed on Saturday.

A similar dinner event, planned for the same evening at the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and Union Minister JP Nadda, has also been cancelled.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit multiple rain-affected states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to assess the situation and review ongoing relief and rescue operations. More than 500 people have been killed in these states since the start of the monsoon season.

President Murmu had expressed deep concern on Friday over the destruction caused by intense rainfall, cloudbursts, and flash floods in several regions. She also offered support to affected communities and praised the efforts of emergency personnel involved in rescue and relief work.

PM Modi had paid a similar visit to President Murmu’s residence on August 3, against the backdrop of intense disputes in the Parliament over the Opposition demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections in the State.
