A woman schoolteacher in Odisha’s Puri district was assaulted, garlanded with slippers and paraded through the streets by her husband and his associates after being accused of an extramarital affair. Her male companion, also a teacher, was subjected to similar abuse. Videos of the incident have since gone viral.

According to police, the victim, who had been living separately from her husband- a college lecturer- due to marital disputes, was residing in a rented house in the Neemapada area. Around 8 pm on Tuesday, her husband, accompanied by several associates, allegedly stormed into the house after suspecting her of infidelity.

Inside, he found her with a male friend following which he dragged the woman out, as seen in video footage. The husband beat her, garlanded with slippers and forced to walk on the street as a crowd looked on. Her companion was stripped to his underwear and paraded in the same manner.

The pair were eventually forced to march towards the local police station, surrounded by jeering onlookers, while many recorded the ordeal on their phones.

Police said they intervened promptly after being alerted and have arrested the husband along with one of his associates. They have been booked under charges including outraging a woman’s modesty and unlawful assault.

Further investigation is underway, police said.
