Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu has announced that the Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport, will be officially inaugurated on October 30. This landmark event, marking the formal opening of Delhi-NCR’s second major airport, is a crucial step towards alleviating pressure on the Indira Gandhi International Airport and bolstering regional connectivity.

According to the minister, flight operations are expected to commence within 45 days of the inauguration. In the initial phase, the airport will connect to 10 major cities, including key metropolitan hubs like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Naidu confirmed that the Ministry is in advanced talks with prominent airlines, with IndiGo and Air India Express being at the forefront of the negotiations to launch the first flight services from the new facility.
The Noida International Airport is being developed as a four-phase mega-project, with an initial investment of over Rs 10,000 crore in its first phase. Designed by a Swiss company, the airport’s first phase includes a single runway and a state-of-the-art terminal building capable of handling up to 12 million passengers annually. Once all four phases are complete, the airport’s capacity is projected to expand to a staggering 70 million passengers per year, making it one of the largest airports in Asia.
Strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is poised to be a game-changer for the economic landscape of western Uttar Pradesh and the broader National Capital Region. The project has already spurred significant real estate development and is expected to generate an estimated one lakh direct and indirect jobs. The airport’s development is part of a larger plan to create a vast economic zone, including a logistics hub, a film city, and various industrial parks. While the project has faced several delays, with the government even imposing penalties on the concessionaire, the final push towards its inauguration signals a determined effort to complete a project that is a linchpin of the region’s future economic growth.
