While Navratri festivities are underway with traditional pujas, garba nights, and dandiya events adding colour across the country, a disturbing incident has cast a shadow over the celebrations in Virar, Maharashtra. At the Navratri Garba organised by New Viva College, a case of filming female participants and posting objectionable remarks online has come to light, prompting swift police action.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), New Viva College has been hosting a Garba event for over two decades, drawing participation from students, alumni, and residents of the locality. This year, the celebrations were held from September 22 to September 26. However, during one of the events, a student secretly recorded videos of girls playing dandiya and uploaded them on the social media platform Discord. The videos were subsequently accompanied by obscene comments posted by another individual.

The matter surfaced on September 26 when, in the midst of the evening celebrations, an unidentified person alerted the college authorities that a student had circulated such videos online. Following this revelation, the administration began inquiries with other students and discovered that the content had been uploaded using a mobile phone and WhatsApp number belonging to a student. Further scrutiny revealed that an account bearing the name of another student had also been used to post indecent comments on the videos.

The incident was promptly reported to the Virar police, who registered a case against the accused. “The actions of the students have hurt the sentiments of society and caused distress to the girls involved,” the FIR noted. Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the individuals operating the accounts and to determine the extent of the circulation of the videos.

Police sources said the matter is being taken seriously given the sensitivity of Navratri celebrations and the involvement of students in a community event.
