Following an above-average monsoon this year, Mumbai is expected to get respite from heavy rains, with meteorologists forecasting only light to moderate showers in the coming days. After two weeks of intense rain that pushed September’s total rainfall nearly twice the monthly average, the city has experienced intermittent spells of moderate showers this week. On Thursday, Santacruz observatory recorded 0.4 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, while Colaba received 14 mm and Thane registered 15 mm.

While rain activity is expected to remain subdued for the next three to four days, the official withdrawal of the monsoon, scheduled for October 8, may be delayed. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) points to a fresh low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal that could sustain monsoon activity in the region for at least another week. As a result, the city may see a continuation of sporadic showers even as most of the country experiences a typical monsoon retreat.

Above-normal rainfall in October

The IMD has also projected above-normal rainfall for Maharashtra in October. A delay in monsoon withdrawal is not unprecedented – in 2024, Mumbai witnessed withdrawal on October 15, while in 2023 and 2022, the process concluded only on October 23. This year’s extended monsoon follows the earliest onset in decades, when unseasonal torrential showers hit Mumbai on May 26, marking the earliest monsoon arrival since 1950.

As of now, Santacruz has recorded 3,100 mm of rainfall since June, nearly 700 mm above the seasonal average. With intermittent showers expected over the next week, residents can anticipate a brief lull in heavy rain, but should remain prepared for sporadic wet spells until the monsoon officially withdraws.
