In a dramatic late-night operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, seized nearly eight kilograms of cocaine smuggled into the country through Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The narcotics, valued at around Rs 79.5 crore in the international illicit market, were being transported by two women passengers who had flown in from Bangkok.

According to officials, the seizure followed precise intelligence inputs about possible drug smuggling through the busy international gateway. Acting swiftly, DRI officers intercepted the two women as soon as they landed. A thorough baggage check revealed a disturbing find—22 brick-shaped packets wrapped tightly and hidden inside toy packages, clearly designed to dodge routine checks.

The haul points yet again to how international cartels are constantly innovating concealment methods, hoping to bypass airport checks. “Toy boxes, food packaging, even false cavities in luggage—traffickers exploit every trick in the book. But intelligence-led operations remain their biggest deterrent,” the officer added on the condition of anonymity.

Both accused have been arrested under the stringent NDPS Act, 1985, and remanded to judicial custody. Investigators are now probing whether the women were mere couriers or had deeper links to a larger international drug syndicate operating across Southeast Asia and India. This bust underscores the growing use of air routes, particularly hubs like Bangkok, as a preferred transit point for cocaine trafficked from Latin America to Asian markets.

Over the past year, Mumbai airport has witnessed multiple high-value narcotics seizures, from methamphetamine and heroin to cocaine, reinforcing its vulnerability as a trafficking corridor. Yet, the agency insists every seizure strengthens deterrence.

As the investigation deepens, the seizure is being seen as another reminder of how India’s economic capital is also a critical frontline in the battle against global drug cartels.
