In a disturbing incident from Madhya Pradesh, a newly-married bride was tortured by her husband with a hot knife in Barwani district after he accused her of “not being beautiful”.

The woman, identified as Khushboo, reportedly suffered more than 50 burn injuries on her body. She filed a complaint against her husband, Dilip Pipaliya, after returning to her maternal home in the Khargone district on Monday, according to a report by the Times of India.

The woman informed reporters that she married Dilip, a scrap dealer from Anjad in Barwani district, on February 2. She claimed that since their marriage, Dilip had been unhappy with her and allegedly criticised her appearance, accusing her of not being beautiful.

The woman claimed that Dilip came home drunk on Sunday and beat her, after which he dragged her to the kitchen and tied her hands and legs. He then heated a knife on the kitchen stove and branded her in several parts of her body, including the hands, back and hip.

Furthermore, Khushboo’s father had also alleged that Dilip’s family had harassed her for dowry. He also claimed that Dilip’s family reached his home on Monday and threatened dire consequences if the woman did not return home.

Dilip’s family members were allegedly present in the house during the attack. Khushboo managed to escape around 4:30 am on Monday by freeing herself, took a mobile from a cleaning staff member, and contacted her family, according to India Today.

On the other hand, Dilip’s family had called the allegations baseless and alleged that her wounds were self-inflicted. They claimed that Dilip liked his wife and had married her with great fervour.

Khargone SP Dharamraj told TOI that Dilip was booked for voluntarily causing hurt, voluntary obstruction, and cruelty towards the woman under sections 115 (2), 118, 126, and 85 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita by Jaitpur police. The case is expected to be transferred to the Anjad police station.
