Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s space mission, and said this was just “the first step”, as the two met at the former’s Lok Kalyan Marg residence.

During their interaction, Shukla, who became the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS), narrated his space life experience to the Prime Minister.

Shukla, who was part of the Axiom-4 commercial mission to the ISS from June 25-July 15, was wearing an ISRO astronaut’s jacket as he met PM Modi. The Prime Minister welcomed Shukla with a warm hug and walked with him with his arm on the astronaut’s shoulder.

WHAT SHUBHANSHU SHUKLA SAID ON HIS EXPERIENCE OF LIVING IN SPACE

“Your body experiences a lot of changes as soon as you enter space,” the Indian astronaut told Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Our body adapts to the environment after some days, but initially, you need to give time to your body and your brain to understand the space,” he added.

“I couldn’t walk straight at first, but then my colleagues supported me,” he said, explaining his experience of living in space.

As PM Modi asked the Indian astronaut about his food intake and diet while he was in space, Shubhanshu Shukla said, “Food is a big challenge on the International Space Station, and there is less space.”

“You do not need many resources to grow sprouts at the International Space Station, they can be grown in a dish filled with water within eight days,” he added.

“This, in future, can help resolve the problem of food security in space,” Shubhanshu Shukla told the Prime Minister.
