Visitors heading to the Taj Mahal may need to reconsider their route, as Mahatma Gandhi Road – one of the city’s busiest stretches – has virtually turned into a bottleneck. With ongoing metro construction, the arterial road is now narrowed, forcing commuters to crawl through long snarls that often last for over an hour.

The situation is particularly grim between Bhagwan Talkies and Rajpur Chungi, a stretch that houses key institutions such as the Agra Municipal Corporation office, St John’s College, Agra College, SN Medical College and the district headquarters. Every day, thousands of students, office-goers and patients are forced to navigate traffic that has become an ordeal, especially during morning and evening rush hours.

While the Police Commissioner had recently directed officials to streamline the city’s traffic system, enforcement remains patchy. Policemen are visible at select intersections, but many others, residents allege, are left “at the mercy of God”.

“The road has been completely cordoned off for metro work, leaving very little space for vehicles. The speed slows down, and jams have become routine. What earlier took 15-20 minutes now takes more than an hour,” said commuter Amar Chauhan, who found himself stranded for nearly 60 minutes while attempting to reach Bhagwan Talkies.

Asha Sharma, another commuter travelling from Khandari, echoed the frustration. “The traffic is unbearable in this heat. Bus and auto drivers park haphazardly, making it worse. The metro work is one reason, but indiscipline adds to the chaos. The police must stay alert, and the construction should be finished quickly,” she said.

With vehicles moving bumper-to-bumper and alternative routes overcrowded, MG Road has effectively become a test of patience for Agra’s residents.
