The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is currently verifying reports that an Indian national has been captured by Ukrainian forces, a source told News18 on Tuesday.

According to the source, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv is ascertaining the veracity of the report. As of now, no official communication has been received from the Ukrainian side.

These comments come after a report by The Kyiv Independent stated that Ukraine’s 63rd Mechanized Brigade had captured an Indian citizen who was allegedly fighting for Russian forces.

The individual was identified as Majoti Sahil Mohamed Hussein, a 22-year-old student from Morbi, Gujarat. According to the brigade, Hussein had travelled to Russia to study at a university but was later imprisoned on drug-related charges. He was sentenced to seven years in a Russian prison.

In a video released by the brigade, which is now being widely shared on X, Hussein is seen speaking in Russian. He claims he was given the option to join the Russian military to avoid further jail time.

“I didn’t want to stay in prison, so I signed a contract for the ‘special military operation’,” Hussein says in the video, using Russia’s term for its invasion of Ukraine. “But I wanted to get out of there.”

Hussein says he underwent 16 days of training and was sent on his first combat mission on October 1, where he spent three days. After a disagreement with his commander, he chose to surrender.

“I came across a Ukrainian trench position about 2–3 kilometres away,” he says. “I immediately put down my rifle and said that I didn’t want to fight. I needed help.”

“I don’t want to go back to Russia. There is no truth there, nothing. I’d rather go to prison here (in Ukraine),” he adds. He also claims he was promised money for joining the Russian army but never received any payment.

According to reports, at least 12 Indian nationals have been killed while fighting for Russia since the war began, and 16 others are currently missing.
