A 17-year-old junior college student was allegedly strangled by her father, who then tried to make her death appear like suicide. The incident happened in Maharashtra’s Davalwadi village on the night of September 5, The Times Of India reported.

According to Badnapur police inspector Ganesh Survase, the accused, identified as Hari Jogdand, was distressed over his daughter’s relationship with a man from their community.

Survase told TOI, “He allegedly murdered her by strangling her while she was asleep.”

The farmer then hanged the body from a metal angle of the roof with a rope in an attempt to portray it as a suicide, the report claimed.

The accused, as per the report, maintains two houses in the village, one where he lives with his wife and two sons, and another where his daughter, the eldest of three children, stayed with her grandmother.

On Friday night nearly 10 pm, he allegedly went to the second house and committed the crime while the girl was asleep.

The report quoted police officials as saying that inconsistencies at the scene and the postmortem, which confirmed death by strangulation, raised doubts.

Subsequently, the accused was placed under surveillance, and he later confessed during questioning on September 6.

He was arrested, produced before a local court, and remanded in two-day police custody.

Sources further told TOI that police action began after receiving an anonymous phone call, following which a team led by sub-inspector Santosh Kuklare reached the spot.
