Maharashtra is opening its doors wide for investments in the maritime and shipbuilding sectors, with the state government promising to provide every possible support to global and domestic investors. Speaking at the inauguration of the third Global Ports and Shipping Summit at Taj Santacruz, Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane underlined that Maharashtra has not only taken the lead in creating its own shipbuilding policy but is determined to turn this vision into a growth engine for the state.

“We want investors to look at Maharashtra as the best destination for shipbuilding and port development. The state has framed a forward-looking policy, and I urge industries to join this journey and contribute to the growth of our shipbuilding sector,” Rane said.

The summit saw participation from international dignitaries, including Belgian Consul Frank Geerkens and Norwegian Consul Monica Nagellgaard, along with senior state officials and company representatives. Additional Chief Secretary for Transport and Ports, Sanjay Sethi, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the economic importance of ports and shipping to both Maharashtra and the country.

Rane said Maharashtra stands apart from other states because of its dedicated coastal zone management authority, which helps ease environmental clearances for projects. He assured investors that the government would fast-track approvals and ensure the timely implementation of projects. “We are industry-friendly, and our focus is on creating an environment where investors feel confident that their money and effort will not be delayed by red tape,” he stressed.

The minister also announced that Maharashtra is pushing ahead with ambitious water transport projects. A water metro service in Mumbai is in the pipeline, aimed at cutting traffic congestion while saving fuel and travel time. Plans are also underway to connect Mumbai with the Konkan coast through water transport, alongside a proposed roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry service. These initiatives, he said, will not just ease transportation but also generate fresh business and employment opportunities.

Sethi, in his remarks, pointed to the growing cargo movement through Maharashtra’s minor ports, which he said signals immense investment potential. He added that the state is working on the Vadhavan Port Project and is promoting a cluster-based development model to expand the shipping ecosystem.

By hosting the summit, Maharashtra has put its maritime roadmap firmly on the global stage. With robust policies, infrastructure, and active government support, the state is positioning itself to become a major hub for shipbuilding, ports, and water transport in the years ahead.
