A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur accused her in-laws and husband of attempt to murder over dowry demands. Alleging harassment, the woman said her in-laws locked her inside a room with a venomous snake.

She was bitten by the snake and is currently under medical supervision. As per a report by Times of India, the woman was locked with a snake in a room on September 18. After suffering a snakebite, she called her elder sister, who took her to Government Ursala Hospital.

The woman also alleged that she informed her in-laws about the bite but they refused to take her to the hospital, despite several pleas.

Woman’s sister told officials that when she was crying in pain, her in-laws stood outside and laughed. Officials said her condition is stable but serious.

Dowry Harassment

TOI reported that the woman got married in 2021. Soon after the marriage, her husband and in-laws started demanding a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and tried to strangle her several times.

Initially, when they demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for renovation of a room, the woman’s parents gave the money but then they started asking for more money.

When her parents refused, they locked her in the room, took her daughter away and loosed a snake on her.

A 24-year-old man died due to snakebite in UP’s Muzaffarnagar. The man had draped the snake around his neck while recording a video.

The victim, identified as Mohit Kumar, had apparently caught the snake from a neighbouring house in Morna village on Sunday evening, according to Bhopa SHO Omprakash Singh.

He was immediately taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. The body has been sent for postmortem, and an investigation is ongoing, the SHO confirmed.

Locals reported that a video of the incident, showing the snake around Mohit’s neck, has surfaced on social media. The snake was later released into a nearby forest.
