Kamal Gavai, mother of Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, announced on Wednesday that she will not attend the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) scheduled in Amravati on October 5.

In an open letter, the 84-year-old said she decided to withdraw from the program, where she had been invited as chief guest, following the controversy and criticism that erupted after the news of her participation became public.

Kamal Gavai, the widow of former Bihar Governor RS Gavai, wrote that both she and her late husband had lived by the ideology of Dr BR Ambedkar.

“As soon as the news of the programme was published, people began levelling allegations not only against me but also against Dadasaheb Gavai. We have lived our lives according to Ambedkar’s principles, and he dedicated his entire life to the Ambedkarite movement,” she wrote.

She noted that her husband had often engaged with organisations of opposing ideologies, including attending RSS events, but had never accepted their Hindutva philosophy.

“If I had been on the dais at the October 5 function, I would have put forward Ambedkarite ideology,” she added.

However, she said the accusations and attempts to malign her over a single programme had deeply pained her.

“I decided to put an end to this controversy by not attending,” she explained, also mentioning that she has been unwell and is undergoing treatment.
