German Ambassador to India and Bhutan, Philipp Ackermann, on Friday said that nearly 60,000 Indian students are currently studying in Germany, a 20% jump in just one year.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, Ackermann wrote, “New numbers are out! Almost 60,000 students from India are currently studying in Germany – a leap of 20 % over a year.”

“My recommendation: our highly prestigious and affordable public universities are a great choice – do check online reviews of private universities,” he added.

The growth in Indian student enrolments reflects a strong shift in academic preferences. According to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Indian students have become the largest international student group in Germany for the second consecutive year — overtaking China, Indian Express reported.

In the winter semester of 2023–24 alone, 49,483 Indian students were enrolled at German universities, up from 42,997 the previous year.

DAAD also reported that the number of Indian students in Germany has more than doubled in the last five years, from 20,810 in 2018–19 to close to 60,000 today. For comparison, the number of Chinese students stood at 39,137 last year, followed by Syria (15,563), Austria (14,762), and Turkey (14,732).

Germany’s rising popularity is also supported by new visa reforms announced in May. Taking effect from 1 July 2025, the changes promise greater transparency, faster processing, and easier access for Indian students, tourists, and skilled workers.

Meanwhile, data from Ministry of Education, presented in the Budget session in March, had showed a 15% drop in the number of Indian students going abroad in 2024. The steepest declines were seen in Canada, the UK, and the US.

However, countries like Germany, France, Russia, and New Zealand saw a rise in Indian students. Germany stood out with a 67% increase, from 20,684 in 2022 to 34,702 in 2024.
