Preparations for this year’s Dussehra festival in Kota, Rajasthan, are set to make history with the construction of what organisers claim will be the world’s tallest effigy of Ravana. Standing at a staggering 215 feet, the structure weighs nearly 12 tonnes and is expected to become the centrepiece of the celebrations.
According to organisers, the colossal effigy will take only three hours to erect and, for the first time, will be set aflame using a remote-controlled ignition system. “The burning will be done with a remote for the first time,” they said, adding that 20 sensors have been installed to trigger a sequence of fireworks that will ignite the figure from crown to base.

The scale of the construction is unprecedented. Nearly 9,500 kgs of iron have gone into the framework, while the face, crafted from fibre, alone weighs around 300 kgs. Ravana’s head measures 25 feet, while the remaining nine heads are each three by six feet in size. A crown rising 60 feet will glitter with multi-colour LED lights, while the effigy’s sword measures 50 feet and its shoes 40 feet.
The grand spectacle will also feature effigies of Ravana’s brother Kumbhakaran and son Meghnad, each standing 60 feet tall and weighing nearly 1,000 kgs. Their faces too have been fashioned from 10-foot-long fibre moulds.
For stability, a 6-foot deep and 25-foot wide concrete foundation has been laid. More than 100 workers, assisted by two cranes and a JCB machine, are engaged in the installation.
Behind the mammoth creation is artist Tejendra Chauhan, who has been building Ravana effigies for the past 39 years. Chauhan’s work has already secured him seven records, five in the Limca Book of Records and two in World Record India. Such is his passion for larger-than-life effigies that he reportedly sold 12.5 acres of land to continue financing his art.
