Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday announced that the deadline for the ongoing Socio-Economic and Academic Survey, commonly known as the caste census, has been extended. He said the survey will be completed within the next 12 days, adding that a detailed review meeting was being held in Bengaluru to finalise the new timeline.
Speaking to reporters, Siddaramaiah said, “I am convening a meeting on the survey. Immediately after the Valmiki Jayanti celebrations, I will take up the review meeting.” The meeting was attended by Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission Chairman Madhusudhan R Naik, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, and senior officials.

The extension comes as the Education Department issued a circular allowing teachers to continue deputation duties for census work, as the enumeration process is yet to be completed. Teachers have been instructed to conduct classes till 1 p.m. and carry out survey duties in the afternoon. In Bengaluru, the survey will continue till October 24, while in the rest of the state, it is expected to conclude by October 12, according to an order issued by School Education Commissioner Surlakar Vikas Kishore.
Meanwhile, the Dasara vacation for government and aided schools has also been extended from October 13 to 18 to accommodate the census work. The move follows demands from the Karnataka State Government Employees Association, which sought holidays for teachers citing mental and physical fatigue from conducting the survey.
The caste census, which began on September 22, is being conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes (KSCBC). It aims to collect socio-economic data from around seven crore residents across two crore households using a 60-question format.
Officials say the data will help the government formulate welfare policies and ensure the inclusion of marginalised communities in the state’s development agenda.
