Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday dismissed the growing tensions between India and US over a now-stalled trade deal and said the relationship between the two countries is strong and a “few comments” do not matter.
India-US ties have taken a hit amid a tariff tussle with the Trump administration imposing a 50 percent tariff of Indian goods, justifying it as “punishment” over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian crude oil.

“While some comments may cause temporary concerns, the India-US friendship is much stronger than a few isolated remarks. The relationship is multi-dimensional and will only strengthen with time,” Goyal said in an exclusive interview with News18 editor-in-chief Rahul Joshi.
Goyal said US-India ties are one of the most consequential and the two countries are “allies and friends”.
“The US-India relationship is one of the most consultative partnerships, built on mutual trust and shared values. Although we have faced certain challenges, I believe these situations will pass, and the relationship will only grow stronger,” he said.
Trade talks between India and the US collapsed earlier this year as the former did not agree to opening its vast agricultural and dairy sectors. Bilateral trade between the world’s largest and fifth largest economy is worth over $190 billion.Â
He said India and the US will continue to work towards finding solutions and aim to reach an outcome in a few months.
“Any measure that harms our farmers or fishermen is unacceptable. We will never compromise on the interests of our farmers, fishermen, or the nation,” he said.
