Amid the ongoing probe into singer Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death, his wife Garima Garg has appealed for a fair, apolitical investigation, expressing concern about “disturbances” in the process. Garg, a cultural icon of Assam and the North East, died in Singapore on 19 September, under mysterious circumstances.

Speaking to the media, Garima Garg said, “I don’t want politics and distraction in Zubeen Garg’s death investigation. I feel there have been disturbances in the investigation process. Truth shall seek justice for him.”

Her statement comes amid mounting speculation, political sparring, and growing public demand for transparency. She emphasised that her only wish is for the investigation to proceed without interference, adding that the focus must remain on uncovering what truly happened to her husband.

Politics over the case

The case has also sparked political tensions. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently remarked that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi shares close ties with Shyamkanu Mahanta, while his own relationship with the organiser is “not good at all.”

Mahanta, the organiser of the North East India Festival and an accused in the case, has claimed he is being made a scapegoat and falsely implicated. He has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking to transfer the investigation to a central agency, alleging that his association with the festival and the singer is being misused to target him.

What do we know about the investigation?

In a major development, the Assam Police CID has summoned at least eight Assamese individuals residing in Singapore who were reportedly present on the yacht when the singer died. Among them, Rup Kamal Kalita, a Singapore-based Assamese businessman, appeared before investigators this week.

Authorities are examining the sequence of events that led to Garg’s death during a North East India cultural festival in Singapore. Official reports suggest he drowned after losing consciousness during a yacht or scuba outing. However, his family and bandmates allege negligence, citing lack of rest, poor safety measures, and a delayed medical response.

The CID and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) have already arrested four people in connection with the case – manager Siddharth Sharma, event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and musician Amritprava Mahanta. They face charges of criminal negligence and murder, with investigators pointing to irregularities in event planning and suspicious conduct during the trip.

The Singapore Police have shared autopsy and investigation details with Indian authorities, confirming drowning as the cause of death, though questions remain about the circumstances.
