A Hyderabad woman has accused her NRI husband, who is reportedly a police officer based in Chicago, United States, of abandoning her in India and fleeing with her passport, green card and jewellery, according to reports.

A complaint was filed with the Panjagutta Police in Hyderabad, which stated that the woman, identified as Hana Ahmed Khan, was married to Mohammed Zainuddin Khan, a police officer in Chicago, in June 2022. The complaint mentioned that the woman faced harassment and emotional abuse after she moved to the US in February 2024, according to the Hindustan Times.

The matter came to the spotlight after a post by Telangana-based Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan, who urged the Centre to take up the matter with US authorities and assist the woman in taking legal action.

“One Hana Ahmed Khan an hyderabadi girl was married to Mohammed Zainuddin Khan (US citizen) working with Chicago Police during June 2022, Later during Feb 2024 she visited USA and started living with her husband in Chicago, she was being subjected to emotional abuse, physical harassment and mental torture,” said Khan.

“Her husband in a planned way brought her back to Hyderabad via performing Umrah on 7th Feb 2025 and chcked in Park Hotel, Somajiguda. While she went to meet her parents her husband with all her belongings like passport, green card, jewelery etc vacated the hotel and went back to USA,” he added.

He further said the woman had attempted to contact her husband for six months, but in vain, and she tried to approach the US consulate in Hyderabad without success.

What Did The Woman Say?

The woman said in her complaint that she was married to Mohammed Zainuddin Khan in June 2022, but he left for the US shortly after their marriage and did not take any steps to reunite with her for nearly two years.

Eventually, he processed her visa and she travelled to Chicago on February 2024. However, Hana claimed she was subjected to emotional abuse, physical harassment and mental torture. She also alleged that her husband tried to pressure her into initiating divorce proceedings, which she refused.

The husband later suggested a family visit to India in February 2024. While she was visiting her family, she was informed by the hotel management that her luggage was removed from the room they were staying in, and her husband had fled to the airport with her passport, green card and personal jewellery, she alleged. All attempts to contact him were unsuccessful.

“I am in a state of distress and humiliation, left stranded in India without legal documents oir the means to return to the US. I tried my level best to approach USA Consulate in Hyderabad b ut was denied entry and my effort through email also failed,” she wrote in the complaint, demanding that authorities intervene and help her fight the case legally.
