They say a husband and wife’s disagreements usually fade after a meal or a night’s rest. But when pride replaces compromise, even small arguments can turn into storms. This was the case in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka where a routine quarrel between a husband and wife ended in tragedy, leaving a family shattered.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Kollegal and surrounding areas. Neighbours and relatives recall Manjunath as a hardworking, quiet man devoted to his family, who never imagined their arguments would escalate this far.

A Quarrel Turns Fatal

Manjunath, a resident of Kollegal in Chamarajanagar district, had been married to Rajeshwari from Hosahalli village, Mandya district, for 13 years. The couple have two young sons, aged 10 and 5.

Despite their family life, frequent quarrels simmered beneath the surface. Manjunath, known to be sensitive, would often become deeply upset after arguments with his wife.

Working as a driver and cook, Manjunath had also opened a beauty parlour for Rajeshwari in their town, while she supplemented the family’s income through tailoring. On the day of the incident, the couple rode to Rajeshwari’s maternal home to bring back some items for the parlour. As evening fell and they started their journey back, an argument broke out, over what exactly remains unclear.

The Moment of Despair

According to Mahesh, Manjunath’s brother, “Manjunath was sensitive and would get angry at everything. They fought, and he stopped the bike here while they were coming and he jumped into the river.”

In a moment of despair, as they reached Dasanapura near Kollegal Taluk, Manjunath abruptly stopped his bike, ran towards the Cauvery River and leapt in front of his wife. Overwhelmed and unable to intervene, Rajeshwari later said, “We fought over a family matter, he got angry, ran and jumped into the river. He said he won’t be around anymore. I couldn’t do anything.”

Locals gathered along the riverbank as rescue teams searched through the night, hoping for a miracle. Social workers in the district have since urged couples to seek counselling for domestic disputes rather than suffer in silence.

Fire and Emergency Services, along with divers, began searching the waters. By the next morning, Manjunath’s body was recovered from the Cauvery.

Police officials say such incidents are a grim reminder of how unaddressed marital stress can spiral into irreversible outcomes, leaving behind not just grief but also two children suddenly without a father.
