Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public grievance hearing on Wednesday morning at her residence in Civil Lines in the national capital. The incident took place during the weekly ‘Jan Sunwai‘ programme when a man entered, allegedly handed over a paper to the Chief Minister, shouted, slapped her, pulled her hair, and abused her.

The accused grabbed the Chief Minister by her hair and did not let go for quite some time. The attacker was identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya, a resident of Gujarat’s Rajkot. Sakriya was later arrested, and the Delhi Police were verifying the details of the accused with assistance from the Gujarat Police.

A Medico-Legal Case (MLC) of the Chief Minister was underway.

Meanwhile, the mother of the accused alleged that her son travelled to the national capital to speak to the Chief Minister over the issue of stray dogs, adding that the accused is an animal lover.

She also alleged the accused suffered mental issues and had attacked his family members on multiple occasions.

Sources said the accused arrived at the Chief Minister’s Office at nearly 7.30 am today. One of his relatives has been lodged in the Tihar Jail, and he was carrying court-related documents related to the same. The accused wanted his relative to be released from jail, it was known.

Delhi BJP Vice President Kapil Mishra, in an X post, wrote, “The attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Ji is an unforgivable crime. A woman, a daughter, who is dedicated day and night solely to the service of Delhi, those who attack her and those who orchestrate it are both cowards and criminals. Shameful and condemnable.”

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj termed the attack a “very cowardly incident” and hailed Rekha Gupta as “a woman of steel resolve”.

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma wrote on X, “The attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during the ‘Jan Sunwai’ at her residence is highly condemnable and a direct assault on democratic values. The public hearing program is a means to connect directly with the people, where the public can convey their questions and concerns to the Chief Minister without any fear or hindrance.”
