Heavy rainfall continued to batter Jammu on Tuesday, triggering landslides and flash floods, blocking roads, and pushing rivers close to danger levels. Doda district has been particularly affected, with visuals showing severe flooding and damage in the area.

So far three people have died in Doda in rain-related incidents. Two people died due to house collapse while one died in flash floods. Though reports of a cloudburst emerged, the District Collector denied any such incident.

Further, Union Minister Jitendra Singh informed in a post on X that he spoke to Doda DC Harvinder Singh, who confirmed a flash flood in the Charwa area of Bhalesa.

The Union Minister tweeted, “Doda: Just Now Spoke to DC Doda Sh Harvinder Singh. According to him, a flash flood has been reported in the Charwa area of Bhalesa. So far, no casualty linked to this flash flood has been reported. The situation is being monitored by the administration, and regular updates being conveyed to my office.”

National Highway Closed

Meanwhile, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, a crucial route connecting Kashmir with the rest of India, was shut down on Tuesday as a safety measure due to landslides and continuous heavy rain.

Traffic was halted at Udhampur and Qazigund after reports of shooting stones from hillocks at Chanderkote, Kela Morh, and Battery Cheshma in Ramban district.

Several rivers and streams across Jammu are flowing close to or above the danger mark, flooding low-lying areas and roads in multiple locations.

According to an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the current weather is caused by a rare combination of a western disturbance and monsoon activity centered over Jammu. IMD has predicted that rain to continue till around 8-9 pm on Tuesday. Heavy rain has been lashing Jammu since Monday night.

The system is expected to move towards Rajouri and Poonch before crossing into Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The weather department warned that the next 24 hours remain critical, especially as Kathua and Samba districts have already recorded 140 mm of rain since Monday.

The MeT said weather is likely to improve by Wednesday, but more rain—moderate to heavy—is likely across the region between August 30 and September 1.
