Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli walked out of jail after spending more than 17 years in prison. As he returned to his residence in Mumbai’s Dagdi Chawl after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in a 2007 murder case, Gawli received a grand welcome from his family members.

Flowers petals were showered, and his supporters sprinkled ‘gulal’ (vermillion powder) and distributed sweets in the area. His family members were happy, and they clicked pictures as he entered his house. Reporters were also present in large numbers at his home. A video of the celebration is also going viral online.

The bench took note of the fact that Gawli was in jail for more than 17 years, and his appeal was pending before it.

“After the completion of all legal formalities of the prisons department, Gawli came out of the jail around 12.30 pm,” an official said.

His family members, relatives, lawyer and supporters waited outside, and they greeted him as he stepped out of the prison.

Gawli was then taken to the Nagpur airport from where he boarded the flight to Mumbai.
