Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has been allotted a Type VIII bungalow at 34 APJ Abdul Kalam Road in the Lutyens’ Zone in Delhi, an official told the Hindustan Times on Monday.

This came days after he moved out of his official residence in Delhi after his resignation and moved into the farmhouse of INLD leader Abhay Chautala, sidestepping the long-held tradition of former constitutional heads being allotted government accommodation.

The residence given to Dhankhar was previously occupied by VK Singh, who is the current Governor of Mizoram and had previously served as a Minister of State (MoS). The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs did not officially comment on the allotment.

All former Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers are entitled to Type VIII bungalows under the Vice-President’s Pension, Housing, and Other Facilities Rules.

Earlier, shortly after Dhankhar moved to Chautala’s farmhouse, sources in the government told News18 that the former VP needed to put a formal requisition for that, mentioning his desired location and choice of either for a bungalow or a plot. In Dhankhar’s case, there had been no such formal allotment notified to his office, nor had his office made a formal request to the government.

This came more than a month after Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, the first day of the Parliament Monsoon Session, citing health reasons. Since his resignation, Dhankhar has kept out of the public eye.

Dhankhar, now 74, is entitled to a Rs 42,000 pension per month, in addition to facilities such as medical care and travel allowance, officials said. The pension from the State Assembly payable to him will be in addition to the pension he will draw as the former Vice-President and an ex-MP.

The former VP had resigned to “prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.” He is the third vice-president in the country’s history who resigned before completing the term.

His sudden exit had created a stir among political circles. Multiple Opposition leaders have repeatedly raised questions over the resignation of Dhankhar, claiming that the former VP might have been forced to resign due to differences between leaders.
