An Indian tech professional has sparked a wave of online discussion after sharing his troubling experience with a toxic manager, who not only played a role in his termination but is now asking him to return to the same company.

The viral Reddit post, shared in the r/IndianWorkplace subreddit, is titled “Terminated from a high paying job. Now they want me back.”

In the post, the 31-year-old IT consultant described a career that had grown steadily over a decade, culminating in a comfortable position at an Indian multinational company, with a salary of Rs 30 LPA and additional RSUs.

In his post, he mentions that in early 2024, he was approached by a foreign company to work as an individual contractor. After clearing multiple interview rounds, he was offered a 150% hike, work-from-home flexibility, and a chance to build a project from scratch.

Initially, things went smoothly. He worked hard, often putting in long hours, and was appreciated by both his manager and senior leadership. However, things reportedly took a turn after the contract was renewed with a 10% raise.

The manager — also Indian — allegedly began micromanaging, criticising minor mistakes, and denying overtime compensation. The techie claims his boss even tried to unofficially push for the hiring of another individual — someone he had personally recommended.

After refusing this proposal, the Redditor says the manager’s behaviour became worse, including verbal abuse and rejection of leave requests. Eventually, he was terminated via email in August, with “non-performance” cited as the reason. Despite the abrupt firing, he completed his notice period professionally and even received appreciation from other teams.

Two months later, after taking time off, he was surprised to receive a call from the same HR asking if he would consider rejoining. The manager’s preferred replacement, he later learned, had failed the interview process.

Now, the techie is unsure whether to return to the high-paying role or move on. “I am now confused whether to join back hoping that things will be better and enjoy high pay or stay my ground and try somewhere else. But I am very sure that I won’t be getting that package anywhere in near future with current market conditions.”

“I also know that everyone is replaceable and they might get someone good in my place for sure. So I will be the ultimate loser in terms of finances and manager may get away with slap on the wrist,” he added.
