The expulsion of K Kavitha, daughter of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief and former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, on Tuesday has brought simmering family and party tensions into the open. The MLC’s ouster came a day after she accused her cousins, senior BRS leaders T Harish Rao and J Santosh Kumar, of “amassing assets” and striking a “tacit understanding” with current Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to tarnish her father’s image.

The Trigger: TBGKS Election Row

Recommended Stories

The flashpoint was the election of former minister Koppula Eashwar as honorary president of the Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS), a powerful coal miners’ union long headed by Kavitha. The election, reportedly held with the backing of KCR and his son and BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, took place while Kavitha was in the US on a personal trip.

Kavitha publicly questioned the process, arguing that holding the election at the party’s Telangana Bhavan office violated labour laws. In a strongly worded letter to TBGKS, she alleged the move was politically motivated and designed to undermine her leadership.

Kavitha’s Counterattack

Kavitha, who has led TBGKS for nearly a decade and also heads Telangana Jagruthi, accused unnamed leaders of conspiring against her. She said she was being targeted for demanding accountability over the leak of a private letter she had written to her father, KCR, earlier this year while abroad. That letter had hinted at rifts within the party and family.

On her return, Kavitha escalated the rhetoric, declaring that while KCR is like a god, he was “surrounded by some devils.” Seen as a veiled attack on her brother KTR, she also asserted she would work only under her father’s leadership.

From Workers’ Champion To Ouster

Kavitha sought to remind supporters of her contributions to Singareni workers during her tenure — from reinstating dependent jobs and securing free power in quarters, to fee reimbursements for employees’ children and persuading KCR to restore compassionate appointments that provided jobs to nearly 19,500 youths.

But her narrative of being a workers’ champion was overtaken by growing factionalism inside BRS. Her claim that “vested interests” were trying to weaken worker unity and target her with personal vendetta did little to prevent her eventual removal.

The Fallout

With her expulsion, Kavitha’s long association with TBGKS and her central role in mobilising support during the Telangana agitation have come to an abrupt end. The episode has laid bare deep fissures within the BRS first family, pitting KCR’s daughter against his son and close allies, raising questions over the party’s cohesion at a time when it faces political challenges in the state.
