The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday convened the third Conference of Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to review preparations for the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The conference was held at the India International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi and was inaugurated by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, in the presence of Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. CEOs from all States and Union Territories were in attendance.

During the conference, the Commission reviewed how ready each state and UT is to carry out the SIR exercise. The CEO of Bihar made a special presentation on the strategies, challenges, and best practices adopted in the state, allowing other CEOs to take useful lessons from their experience.

The CEOs gave detailed updates on the number of electors in their respective regions, the qualifying date of the last SIR, and the current status of the electoral roll. They also shared the progress made in digitising and uploading electoral rolls on their official websites.

One key issue discussed was the mapping of current electors with those recorded during the last SIR, to ensure accuracy. The Commission also reviewed the rationalisation of polling stations, aiming to keep the number of electors at each station below 1,200.

In order to improve voter inclusion, the CEOs shared suggestions on acceptable documents that eligible citizens can submit to register. The Commission stressed that the process should be simple and accessible.

The status of appointment and training of key electoral officers – including District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant EROs, Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) – was also reviewed.

The Commission is expected to announce the rollout date for the nationwide SIR soon.
