A 70-year-old man attempted to take his own life by pouring kerosene on himself outside the main gate of Mumbai’s Mantralaya building on Tuesday evening, Mumbai police confirmed.
The man, identified as Prem Bajaj, allegedly doused himself with a flammable liquid in protest against constant noise from cashew polishing factories near his home. These factories operate 24 hours a day and have caused him significant distress.

“The man attempted suicide by pouring kerosene on himself… Security personnel detained him and later handed him over to the Marine Drive police,” Mumbai police statement said.
According to police, Bajaj had repeatedly complained to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the local administration about the noise pollution, but his complaints were ignored. This lack of response reportedly led to his desperate act.
“The noise from the factories had caused him significant distress. He had complained to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the local administration several times, but his complaints were met with no response,” police added.
After being questioned at the Marine Drive Police Station, Bajaj was released on a notice, police confirmed.
