In December 1971, the India-Pakistan war was at its peak, with Indian forces steadily advancing and Pakistan facing repeated setbacks. On one such day, two explosions occurred in the sky within seconds of each other. Both Indian and Pakistani soldiers witnessed the blasts, but it was not immediately clear which side had carried out the strike.
The incident took place on December 12, 1971, when Indian fighter jets launched an offensive on Pakistani positions on the western front, supported by MiG-21 supersonic fighters from the 29th Squadron. Flight Lieutenant Arun Kumar Dutta commanded the Mig-21 escort, ensuring no hindrance to the mission.

The wreckage of the aircraft fell into the Arabian Sea, marking a clear advantage for India in the encounter. Flight Lieutenant Arun Kumar Dutta was honoured with the Vir Chakra for his heroism in this battle.
