A 28-year-old Dalit man was brutally hacked to death near Mayiladuthurai on Monday night, allegedly by the relatives of a woman with whom he had been in a long-term relationship.

Police have arrested five people in connection with the killing, even as the victim’s family and local organisations staged protests demanding that the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act be invoked. The family alleged that the woman’s mother, a non-Dalit, instigated the attack.

According to TOI, the victim, K Vairamuthu, had been in a relationship for nearly a decade with Malini, 26, who worked in Chennai. While Malini and her father belong to the same Scheduled Caste community as Vairamuthu, her mother, Vijaya, is a non-Dalit and strongly opposed their relationship.

“The girl’s mother strongly disliked Vairamuthu and his mother. Hence, she opposed their relationship and their wedding plan,” Mayiladuthurai SP G Stalin told TOI.

Tensions had escalated recently when Vijaya allegedly confronted Vairamuthu at his workplace, hurling abuses at him, a confrontation reportedly captured on video. Just last week, a police-mediated meeting was held where Malini reaffirmed her decision to marry Vairamuthu. After being disowned by her family, she moved in with him, and the couple was planning to register their marriage.

On Monday night, with Malini away in Chennai for work, a group of six men armed with sickles ambushed Vairamuthu while he was returning home on his two-wheeler. He sustained severe injuries to his neck and hands and later succumbed at the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital.

TOI reported that police registered a case on the basis of a complaint filed by Vairamuthu’s mother, Rajalakshmi. SP Stalin formed four special teams to track down the attackers, and five suspects have since been arrested.
