CPI-M MP Amra Ram has urged the government to clarify the conditions under which it would permit a meeting with imprisoned Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk, following his unsuccessful attempt to meet Wangchuk at Jodhpur Central Jail. Ram was turned away after waiting for half an hour.

The Sikar MP arrived at the jail on Tuesday evening to find police barricades erected a short distance from the main gate. He subsequently sent a written request to the jail superintendent for permission to meet Wangchuk, but the administration cited regulations and denied the request.

Wangchuk was transferred to Jodhpur jail after being detained in Leh last Friday under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly instigating violent protests on September 24. He has been a prominent figure in the movement seeking statehood and extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.

“The promises made to the people of Ladakh were not fulfilled, protesters were fired upon and their leader Sonam Wangchuk was put behind bars,” Ram told reporters outside the jail.

“Wangchuk is not a terrorist that even a meeting with him should be denied. The government should clarify when and under what conditions it would allow a meeting with Wangchuk,” he said.

The MP also accused the Central government of betrayal and adopting a repressive attitude.

Since Wangchuk’s arrival at Jodhpur, additional security measures have been implemented. Barricades have been erected, and police personnel are stationed a considerable distance from the main gate of the Central Jail. Officials indicated that anyone passing through the area is subject to questioning and must provide a valid reason for proceeding further.

The police are also monitoring the jail premises inside and outside via CCTV cameras.
