Ladakh Unrest: Ladakh Congress President Nawang Rigzin Jora on Thursday demanded a judicial probe into the violent protest that claimed at least four lives and left 90 others injured.

In a letter addressed to Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta, Jora criticised the police firing on protesters, saying that the situation could have been handled with little more restraint.

“I am approaching you with a heavy heart and deep sorrow to demand a judicial enquiry into the unfortunate incident leading to the death of 4 young men. We condemn the harsh and repressive measures that were carried out,” he stated in the letter.

The territorial unit president also challenged the administration’s claims that a Congress Councillor led the mob, based on a purported photograph. He said that a lot of blame game is going on over the violent protest.

“There is a lot of blame game going around. Some of these are targeting a Congress councillor for leading the mob on the basis of a purported photograph. Nothing can be further from the truth. In the interest of justice and fair play, we implore you to kindly conduct a judicial enquiry,” the letter added.

BJP Accuses Congress Of Inciting Violence

The former Jammu and Kashmir minister’s letter came a day after the BJP accused a Congress councillor of inciting and instigating violence during protests demanding statehood in Ladakh.

While addressing a press conference in the national capital, BJP MP Sambit Patra said that attempts were made to “portray” that protests were being led by the youth. He further claimed that when investigated, it was found that these protests were ignited by Congress councillor Phuntsog Stanzin Tsepag, whose numerous photos have surfaced on social media platforms.

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya also echoed similar allegations and asked whether Rahul Gandhi wanted this kind of unrest in Ladakh.

Additionally, the Union Home Ministry issued a statement and accused climate activist Sonam Wangchuk of being responsible for “instigating the mob through his provocative speech.”

Wangchuk, who had been on a 15-day hunger strike demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, ended his fast shortly after the violence broke out in Leh.

Ladakh Unrest

The latest developments came amid accusations against the activist that he incited a mob that turned violent on Wednesday over the demand for statehood for Ladakh.

At least four people were killed and over 90 were injured after protests demanding statehood turned violent. At least 50 people have been detained so far in connection with the violence that broke out during the shutdown called by Leh Apex Body (LAB) to demand an extension of the Sixth Schedule and statehood for Ladakh.

In view of the prevailing situation, Leh District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk ordered closure of all government and private schools, colleges, and other educational institutions for two days from Friday. Besides, Anganwadi centres will also remain closed, the DM said.
