Chhattisgarh police informed the state High Court that it has seized 211 knives from 193 people. The move comes after the High Court took Suo motu cognizance of a news article that knives were being openly sold and are easily accessible.

Raising concerns regarding increased cases of stabbing, the court observed that an effective strategy is required in this direction.

As per a report by Bar and Bench, the police seized the knives on the basis of information revealed by e-commerce websites which had sold such knives.

On August 25, the police told Division Bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Bibhu Datta Guru that e-commerce sites like Amazon, Flipkart, and others have been asked to share the details of customers who ordered the knives other than ones used in kitchens.

An action under the Arms Act is taken against the accused. The Court was also informed that in 2024, a total of 1,399 cases were registered under the provisions of the Arms Act. 677 cases were registered between January and June this year.

Responding to police’s response, the court observed that while the situation is alarming, the government is taking adequate measures.

“We further hope and trust that the State and its agencies would be more vigilant and take positive steps in curbing the aforesaid menace which would in turn help in reducing the crime relating to the Arms Act, in the society,” the Court’s order was quoted by Bar and Bench.

The matter is further listed to be heard on September 22.
