OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot ChatGPT faced a major global outage on Monday, leaving users across several countries — including India — unable to access the service for over an hour.

The disruption quickly turned into a trending topic on social media, where users flooded platforms with memes about their sudden struggle to work without the chatbot’s help.

According to DownDetector, a real-time outage tracking website owned by Ookla, over 700 reports of ChatGPT being down were logged between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm (IST).

Indian users from metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata were among those affected.

As work came to a halt for many, social media filled with humorous posts highlighting users’ dependence on the AI tool for everything from drafting emails to solving assignments.

One user quipped, “ChatGPT is down, so I finally have to use my brain,” while another joked, “The world comes to a stop when ChatGPT stops working.”

Others shared relatable frustrations, with one post reading, “Project submit karna hai, aur ye ChatGPT down ho gaya (I have to submit a project and now ChatGPT’s down).”

Another wrote, “You come to Twitter to check if ChatGPT is really down.”

The outage came shortly after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the launch of Sora 2, an upgraded version of the company’s text-to-video AI model, now available as a standalone app in the US and Canada.

In a blog post, Altman said OpenAI would strengthen its policies around copyrighted material, allowing rights holders “more granular control” over how their characters are used in AI-generated content — a step similar to its opt-in model for likeness generation.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, OpenAI plans to require copyright owners, including film studios, to opt out if they do not want their content appearing in videos generated by Sora 2.

While the brief outage of ChatGPT caused a momentary panic among its vast global user base, the flood of memes also highlighted just how deeply the AI chatbot has become woven into daily digital routines.
