As work on India’s first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad progresses, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has shifted focus to passenger-related works at Vadodara and Anand stations in Gujarat.

A fresh tender seeks to transform the two stations into modern transport hubs, with multi-modal integration for buses, autos, parking and passenger facilities, along with station plaza development. At Vadodara, the package also includes new foot overbridges to streamline passenger movement.

The work on the stations of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (HSR) project involves pick-up/drop zones, bus bays, parking, pedestrian circulation, signage, and other passenger amenities. The work also includes an electric vehicle (EV) charging system.

Speaking to News18, an official aware of the details said the development involves the forecourt and areas in front of the stations.

“With the station progress nearing completion, the other work will start on essential services beyond the track and platforms for a smoother passenger experience,” the official said.

The document seen by News18 shows that the station plaza work for the two stations of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project includes toilets, kiosks, shaded walkways, seating, pergolas, green areas, and landscaping, apart from signage structures, plaza lighting, water features, feature walls.

At Vadodara Station, three new Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) are planned, linking Vadodara railway station with the HSR concourse and the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) bus depot; FoB connecting Alkapuri entry structure with HSR concourse and the one from parking and plaza with HSR concourse. The scope of work also includes extension of the underpass near Priyalaxmi Mill at Channi Road in Vadodara HSR Station.

In July, News18 had reported that the Vapi-Sabarmati section of the project in Gujarat is expected to be ready by December 2027, while the entire corridor connecting Mumbai will be operational by the end of 2029. As of June-end, Rs 78,839 crore has been spent on the project.

The 508 km route covers Gujarat, Maharashtra and Dadra & Nagar Haveli with 12 stations planned—one each at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

The Japanese government has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. Japan currently operates the E5 series Shinkansen trains while the E10 is the next-generation upgrade. The E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan.
