In a significant development towards its long-awaited Metro Phase 3 expansion, Bengaluru is slated to take a big stride forward. The Karnataka cabinet gave its approval to the Rs 9,700-crore double-decker viaduct project on Thursday. The decision paves the way for civil works to begin after several months of delay.

Under this plan, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will construct elevated lines above flyovers on two key corridors. Bengaluru Namma Metro Phase 3 is expected to be operational by May 2031, with the civil work likely to begin by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

According to a report by Deccan Herald, the first corridor will connect JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura. It is slated to run along the western stretch of the Outer Ring Road (ORR). It will feature a 28.486-km flyover, the longest in Bengaluru.

The second corridor will stretch from Kadabagere to Hosahalli along Magadi Road, featuring an 8.635-km flyover. Together, the double-decker viaducts will span a total of 37.121 km. By integrating metro lines with roadways, the project marks a first-of-its-kind initiative in Bengaluru.

According to Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil, the total cost of Rs 9,700 crore includes land acquisition, civil works, design, and other expenses.

While the Centre is expected to fund only the metro lines, the state government will shoulder 50 per cent of the flyover cost, of which 10 per cent will come from urban local bodies and 40 per cent through loans. Notably, Karnataka has already earmarked Rs 4,000 crore for Namma Metro in the 2025–26 budget, part of which is likely to be utilised for this project, the report states.

Initially, the stretch was planned to run a distance of 44.65 km, which has now been trimmed to 37.121 km.

With civil works slated to start in early 2025, tenders for the first four packages—covering both stations and viaducts—are expected to be floated later in September.
