A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police, probing the death of singer Zubeen Garg, carried out raids at multiple locations in Guwahati. The searches included the residence of event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, as well as the homes of Zubeen Garg’s manager and sound recordist. This came a day after the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma banned Shyamkanu Mahanta from organising any functions or events.

The SIT was constituted to investigate the singer’s death during the Northeast India Festival in Singapore on September 19. Authorities said Zubeen Garg died by drowning.

CM Assures Probe, Mentions CBI Option

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged the public to give the SIT time to complete its probe but added that the case could be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if its findings proved unsatisfactory.

“Have faith in the SIT. They will probe all the possibilities that led to the death. If the SIT fails, we will hand over the case to the CBI,” Himanta Sarma said. He also alleged that “a section of people” around the singer had tried to exploit him for their own gain, adding. “The event that Mahanta organised… I never encouraged it. We will not fund them anymore and have banned them.”

The Chief Minister further said that Shyamkanu Mahanta had often criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP and that his programmes “were not associated with Assamese culture.”
