The Assam Police Chief Minister’s Vigilance team on Monday raided Bora’s residence in Guwahati, seizing approximately ₹90 lakh in cash and over ₹1 crore worth of gold ornaments. The total value of the recovery is estimated at ₹2 crore. Besides, Rs 10 lakh cash was recovered during a raid at her rented house in Barpeta.

According to an officer, Bora was arrested soon after the raid and booked for possessing wealth disproportionate to her income.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking to the media, revealed that Nupur Bora had been under surveillance for the past six months.

Nupur Bora, a resident of Golaghat who joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019, was currently posted as a circle officer in Kamrup district’s Goroimari. During her tenure as Circle Officer in Barpeta district, she allegedly facilitated the illegal registration of government and Satra land in the names of suspected illegal settlers, referred to by the CM as “Miyaan“.

The Special Vigilance cell also conducted a raid at the residence of her alleged aide, Lat Mandal Surajit Deka, who works at the revenue circle office in Barpeta. He has been accused of acquiring multiple land properties across Barpeta in collusion with Bora, when she was the Circle Officer there.

The raid was initially scheduled for Sunday night, but had to be postponed as the officer was not at her residence and was reportedly staying at a guest house. The operation was carried out early Monday morning when she returned home. The raid began at her Guwahati residence and later extended to three additional locations linked to her.

The Chief Minister stated that authorities had full knowledge of the officer’s activities and had been closely monitoring her for months. Supporting the state’s case, local activist group Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), led by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, filed a formal complaint against the officer. The complaint alleged that she maintained a detailed “rate card” for various land-related services. According to the complaint, bribe amounts ranged from ₹1,500 for land maps to Rs 2 lakh for name inclusion or cancellation in land records.

SP of CM Vigilance, Rosy Kalita, who led the raid, confirmed that there were multiple corruption allegations against the officer. She stated that the cash and ornaments seized were part of a preliminary operation, and further investigations may lead to more shocking revelations and evidence.
