The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday slammed Congress leader Udit Raj for making “anti-national” remarks in the backdrop of Nepal unrest.

In a post on X, Udit Raj, Chairman of Unorganized Workers & Employees Congress, said: “People are discussing the way in which the public has uprooted power in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Could something like that not happen in India? Some people are even expressing the possibility of it happening. In fact, the circumstances are just the same, and in some cases even more so, but our constitution prevents us from doing so. The roots of our democracy are very deep, which were planted by the Congress.”

In response to the post, BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan said that these remarks “are blatantly anti-national and deliberately inciting unrest”.

“The Congress leadership both past and present is always the greatest threat to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution. The Congress party in 1975 murdered our Constitution and massacred our democracy. These remarks mirror the same emergency mindset of the Congress,” he further said.

Nepal was rocked by Gen Z–led protests sparked by a short-lived social-media ban and long-simmering anger over corruption, triggering curfews and army deployment as clashes intensified in Kathmandu and other cities. The entire protest has left around 25 people dead, while over 600 people were injured. Authorities have now reopened Kathmandu airport after a brief shutdown, but prohibitory orders remain in force as the situation evolves.

Meanwhile, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah appealed to Nepal’s Gen Z and the wider public on Thursday to remain calm as the country transitions to an interim administration and fresh elections.
